Munich & Oktoberfest

After arriving in Munich we got changed and went straight over to Oktoberfest. (Convienently our hostel was only a block and a half away) Oktoberfest is held on ‘fair grounds’ that are used almost exclusively for Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest began in Munich as a special Birthday celebration for Maria Theresa and interestingly enough isn’t actually in October. It actually takes place the last two weeks of September and ends on the second of October, the day before the German national holiday.  In the ‘tents’ (that are primarily solid wooden structures that somewhat resemble a barn or arena from the outside) we sit at the traditional long wooden tables and of course drink beer! When you order a beer in the tent you order a ‘Mass’ (1L beer mug) of whatever the tent’s brew is (most tents had Paulner, but there were a few other ones). Also these beers weren’t your average 5%, they were about 15% 😜If you are gonna do Oktoberfest you gotta do it right, so of course I needed my own Dirndl!! After a long day in the beer tents we were in tip top shape and very much ourselves. Me oblivious to the rest of the girls, Kiana looking good as always, Haydee upset about something, Caro eating, and Danae in Lala land. Here are some pictures from outside on the Oktoberfest fair grounds with the Theresienwiese Statue at the far end of the grounds.

We had arrived at Oktoberfest in time for the last two days of the festival. So on our third day we toured through Munich a bit. First we wandered through Englischer Garten. Next we walked by and through the Hofgarten (or courtyard garden).

Marienplatz is the old town hall and new town hall. It also has a clock tower that somewhat resembles the one in Old Town Square in Prague.  Early the next day it was off to catch the bus to Austria…
