Back in 2009 I went on a Tour de France trip with my junior high. The same teacher has been doing the trip for 25 years now. This year when she did her France trip I decided to meet up with her group the weekend they were in Nice because it isn’t very far from me
I arrived on Friday evening, but after meeting them for dinner we all turned in early.
Saturday morning we took the students to a true French market and then wandered through a bit of Vieux Nice (old Nice).
After lunch we went on a quick tour of Confiserie Florian, a candy factory and then took a walk up Colline du Chateau (castle hill). On Colline du Chateau we visited the castle ruins and a small waterfall that was off one side.
One of the students was ill, so when Madame stayed behind with her then, being my mother’s daughter and knowing French I somewhat took over the lead. Something the other adults on the trip seems quite happy to let me do lol
That evening while the students had some free time, Madame and I wandered off to find some dinner and catch up.
Sunday morning we went into Cannes, where we of course stopped in front of Palais des Festivals, where the Cannes International Film Festival takes place.
My friend Stef met up with us then we all went over to l’Île Sainte-Marguerite.
On the ile we visited Fort Royal which has parts of it that date back to 4th century BC when the island was populated by Romans.
The Romans built cisterns to provide the islanders with water.
This is also the island where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisonned for 11 yrs, before being moved to Paris. In the 1970s and artist came and painted murals in the prison cells.
There is an optical illusion gold star painting in the hallways of the prison.
In the other half of the building there is a small museum collection of pottery urns recovered from a sunken Roman cargo ship just off the island coast.
Some more pictures from around the fort and the rest of the island.
